I would like to welcome all of our faculty, staff, coaches, and especially the student-athletes back to campus for what is sure to be another great year at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School. In fact, much work has been done over the summer to ensure this as many teams participated in various leagues, tournaments, and camps to improve their talents for the upcoming school year.
The big news last year was with our track program and Owen Clanahan, who won the state title in the 200m hurdles. It was a great honor for our school to have a second state winner in only three years. We also continued our excellence on the spring fields as both baseball and softball experienced great seasons, baseball in particular as they won their fourth straight district championship.
Our school was also fortunately enough to send several of our student-athletes to college programs. Carson Ragsdale will be attending D1 South Florida on a baseball scholarship, while a number of other athletes on campus moved on to programs at the D2, D3, and NAIA levels.
We believe that Bishop McLaughlin High School Athletics provide a unifying influence within our student body and between our school and community. The Hurricane family will endeavor to provide each participant with positive experiences that will help them develop their own philosophy toward commitment, responsibility, and loyalty which will guide them for post-school competition and participation in society and within the Catholic Church. We believe that the will to win is a natural human trait, but this urge whether individual or collective, is not to be attained at the price of unfair advantage or gained through violation of established rules and principles. While our ultimate goal as an athletic department is to build programs that win every year, I am proud to say that we have coaches who believe that improvement leads to success, and that winning is a byproduct of improvement.
We have tremendous student-athletes on our campus in all of our sports, all striving to become greater on and off the field. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating our student-athletes throughout the year and join us at one of our athletic events. While you’re at it, bring a friend… or three. We’ll see you in the stands.
